While driving around the Ifo 2 East and Ifo 2 West camps visiting schools, the Red Cross staff were explaining to me that school enrollment is so low not just because of the poor standards and inadequate infrastructure, but that for many Somali parents, duksis and madrasas are preferred.
I was told that in Dadaab there are hundreds of duskis, which are informal Islamic schools. We drove past one on the way back to the base camp and stopped to have a look.
