A component of our book collection for primary and secondary schools that we had felt was lacking in the past, and that we are broadening now, are books on sexual education. This is always a subject where you need to tread carefully, as although some subjects are refreshingly open (such as AIDS awareness), others are still considered very taboo to talk about (rape).

I will never forget a CRE (Christian Religious Education) I sat in on, which taught Standard 4 students (Grade 4) about ‘sexual misuses’. A vastly different take on the subject than what I was taught at school, but even so it is a part of their curriculum. Meanwhile, we are speaking with different publishers about what kinds of books to include that can help inform the students without overstepping cultural sensitivities.
