An essential step that we take in setting up libraries at schools is labelling the books with our custom KEY book subject and genre labels. It is a process that we require students and librarians (if on staff) to participate in.
The labelling process always prompts discussions about how an ideal library should be set up to encourage students and teachers to maximize use of it. By default, students and teachers become familiar with all new books. We get a chance during this process to discuss the genres and the rhyme and reason behind our labelling, which is based on our extensive research and experience on how Kenyan students navigate libraries and what grabs their attention.
Books labelling days are some are the most worthwhile in our library roll out. It is a process of discovery and invaluable training.
